Primary malignant melanoma of the sinonasal cavity: MR imaging evaluation.
نویسندگان
چکیده
To evaluate the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics of primary malignant melanoma of the sinonasal cavity, T1- and T2-weighted MR images of 12 patients with primary sinonasal melanoma were retrospectively reviewed. Gadolinium-enhanced imaging was performed in seven cases. The MR images were compared with histopathologic results. There were seven melanotic melanomas and five amelanotic melanomas; hemorrhage was present in three melanotic and two amelanotic melanomas. The seven melanotic melanomas were hyperintense to gray matter on T1-weighted images (whether hemorrhage was present or not), consistent with the paramagnetic effect of melanin. Four of the five amelanotic melanomas had intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images; one was not detected. On T2-weighted images, all of the melanomas detected had intermediate though variable signal intensity compared with that of gray matter. On gadolinium-enhanced images, all cases demonstrated mild to moderate enhancement. The signal intensity of sinonasal melanoma appears to vary according to the histopathologic components of the tumor. High signal intensity within the lesion on T1-weighted images suggests the presence of melanin.

Sinonasal malignant melanoma with diffuse carcinomatosis: initial PET/CT staging and follow-up CT/MR imaging
Mucosal malignant melanoma of the head and neck is a rare but aggressive type of melanoma with poor clinical prognosis and outcome. Its nonspecific symptomatology frequently leads to its delayed diagnosis until advanced stages of the disease. The author presents a case of primary sinonasal amelanotic melanoma with preoperative F-18 FDG PET/CT showing diffuse bone metastasis only two months afte...

OBJECTIVE The study purpose was to detect the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared to computed tomography (CT) and different imaging modalities as conventional radiology in evaluation of sinonasal neoplasms diagnosed by Histopathology. METHODS Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females) were complaining of symptoms related to sinonasal tract. After thorough clinical and local exam...

BACKGROUND Malignant sinonasal melanoma (MSM) is a rare tumor with a perplexing signal intensity due to variable histopathologic components. This study was undertaken to delineate its MR imaging features. METHODS MR imaging findings of 10 patients (6 women and 4 men, mean age 61.3 years old) with pathologically confirmed MSM were retrospectively reviewed. The location, size, signal intensity,...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE SAP is a rare lesion of the sinonasal cavity, which may be misdiagnosed as a benign or malignant neoplasm. The purpose of our study was to comprehensively evaluate the MR imaging features of SAP. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with SAP confirmed pathologically were retrospectively reviewed. Of the 40 patients undergoing MR imaging, 39 had postcontrast T1WI; 30, DC...
متن کاملThe Value of Technetium-99m Labeled Alpha-Melanocyte- Stimulating Hormone (99mTc-α-MSH) in Diagnosis of Primary and Metastatic Lesions of Malignant Melanoma
Objective(s): Malignant melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancers with unfavorable prognosis. Alpha-MSH peptide analogues have a high affinity for melanocortine-1 (MC1) receptors on melanocytes overexpressing in malignant melanoma cells. Pre-clinical studies have shown promising results for radiolabeled MSH imaging in this malignancy. The purpose of this study is to assess the diagnostic...
